Black Dog welcomes you to the beautiful City of Wells ~ the smallest city in England

Wells CathedralWells is a historical city nestling on the southern side of the Mendip Hills with the Somerset Levels stretching away to the south and west. The story of Wells goes right back to Roman times when we know that there was a settlement, probably because of the springs that bubble up here. Wells gets its name from these springs which can today be found in the gardens of the Bishop's Palace.

Although it is only the size of a small town with just over 12,000 inhabitants, Wells can call itself a city because it has the famous 13th century cathedral. It remains remarkably unspoilt and has many other beautiful buildings including the moated Bishop's Palace, Vicars' Close, two more notable churches and a good local museum. The Market Place, with lively markets twice a week, narrow streets and an eclectic mix of building styles all reflect on the continuing development of the town throughout the ages.

Wells has much to see in it as well as providing a base for exploring the surrounding area. Within 20 miles you can visit Bath, Bristol, Glastonbury and many other historic towns. Other nearby attractions include the famous caves at Wookey Hole, Cheddar Gorge & Caves, the Mendip Hills, Glastonbury Abbey and Tor with the mystic Somerset Levels all around.

We hope you will come and visit our beautiful city sometime soon. Our own business, Black Dog of Wells, makes unique and decorative terracotta tiles. They are designed and made next to the cathedral in the centre of Wells and are bought worldwide. If you would like to see more of what we do, please click on one of the terracotta tiles to the left of the screen.

To help you explore Wells we have compiled a fascinating circular walk around the Bishop's Palace moat, which takes about half an hour. During this you will see various unusual aspects of the city and also come right past our studios! You can download the Moat Walk from the link below.

We want you to know about the lovely city where we live and work, but we are not the official website. Look out for the Wells Tourist Information Centre links on the other pages of the website. They have much more information on accommodation, places to eat and an extensive list of events.
